We’ve all been there; you’re working on something important, and suddenly, your MacBook freezes. The cursor won’t move, the keyboard is unresponsive, and your only option seems to be a restart. But sometimes even that isn’t an option if your mouse has stopped working. Knowing how to force restart a frozen MacBook under any circumstance is, therefore, very handy information!

MacBook freezes are less common these days after the advent of Apple Silicon chips. When MacBooks used to use Intel chips, crashes were more common. But that doesn’t mean they don’t happen anymore, I had one literally yesterday when trying to record a Loom video.

Quick Fixes Before a Force Restart

Before resorting to a force restart, try these quick fixes:

    • Close unresponsive apps – Press Command + Option + Escape to open the Force Quit menu and close frozen applications.
    • Check for overheating – If your Mac feels hot, let it cool down before restarting.
    • Use Activity Monitor – Open Activity Monitor (Command + Space, then type “Activity Monitor”) to close any apps using excessive CPU power.

How to Restart a MacBook Normally

If your MacBook is responsive, follow these steps to restart it the standard way:

    1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
    2. Select Restart.
    3. If prompted, save any open work before confirming.

Alternatively, you can press Control + Command + Power Button to restart instantly.

How to Force Restart a MacBook Pro

If your MacBook Pro is completely unresponsive, try this method:

    1. Press and hold the Power button (or Touch ID button) for 10 seconds.
    2. Wait for the screen to go black.
    3. Press the Power button again to turn your Mac back on.

How to Force Restart a MacBook Air

The process is the same for a MacBook Air:

    1. Hold down the Power button for at least 10 seconds.
    2. Once the screen turns off, wait a few seconds.
    3. Press the Power button to restart your Mac.

How to Restart a MacBook with the Keyboard

If your MacBook Air’s trackpad is unresponsive, use this keyboard shortcut:

    1. Press and hold Control + Command + Power Button until the screen turns off.
    2. Wait a few seconds, then press the Power button again to restart.

How to Hard Reset a MacBook Pro

A hard reset (also called an SMC reset) can help fix persistent issues:

    1. Shut down your MacBook Pro.
    2. Hold Shift + Control + Option and press the Power button for 10 seconds.
    3. Release all keys and press the Power button again to turn it back on.

What to Do If Your Mac Still Won’t Restart

If your MacBook still refuses to restart, try these troubleshooting steps:

    • Reset the SMC – Follow the hard reset steps mentioned earlier.
    • Boot into Safe Mode – Restart while holding Shift until the login screen appears.
    • Use macOS Recovery Mode – Restart while holding Command + R, then choose Disk Utility to check for disk issues.
    • Check for external device issues – Disconnect all peripherals and try restarting.

    Preventing Future Freezes

To keep your Mac running smoothly, follow these tips:

    • Update macOS regularly – Keep your software up to date for bug fixes and security patches.
    • Manage storage wisely – Keep at least 10-20% of your storage free.
    • Limit background apps – Close unnecessary apps to free up RAM.
    • Monitor system health – Use Activity Monitor to keep an eye on CPU and memory usage.
    • Restart periodically – A restart every few days can prevent performance slowdowns.

    Wrapping Up

Whether you’re performing a standard restart, a force restart, or a hard reset, these methods should help resolve most issues. If your MacBook keeps freezing then there is likely a bigger problem that could range from having too many files clogging up your storage or a hardware problem.

If you’ve ruled out something like the former and it is still a problem, then it is worth seeking help from a repair professional.
