The Basics
Unlike Windows devices that have a dedicated right-click button, Mac devices rely on gesture-based controls to achieve the same functionality. The trackpad on a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro has no physical space to right-click, if you try to click on the right-hand side then it just registers as a normal click.

Fortunately, right-clicking (known as a secondary click in Apple land) is simple once you know how. Let’s break it down by device.
What Right Click Can Do on a Mac
Right-clicking on a Mac unlocks a wide range of contextual menu options, allowing you to:
- Copy, paste, and delete files more efficiently
- Open files with specific applications
- Access additional options in macOS apps and Finder
- Customise settings and preferences quickly
If you’re looking to get the most out of your Mac, mastering the right-click function is essential.
How to Right-Click on a MacBook
All modern MacBooks, including the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, use a built-in trackpad that supports gesture-based right-clicking. Here’s how to enable and use it:

Option 1: Two-Finger Press
- Place two fingers (usually your index and middle fingers) on the MacBook trackpad.
- Press down once with both fingers at the same time. This performs a right-click action.

You can also lightly tap the trackpad with two fingers to perform the same function.
Option 2: Control + Click
- Hold down the Control (⌃) key on your keyboard.
- Click the trackpad with one finger.
This functions as a right-click regardless of your trackpad settings.
Option 3: Customise Right Click in System Settings
- Open System Settings (Apple menu > System Settings).
- Navigate to Trackpad > Point & Click.
- Locate the Secondary Click option and choose one of the following:
- Click with two fingers (Default)
- Click in the bottom right corner
- Click in the bottom left corner

Once enabled, you can right-click on a MacBook using your preferred setting.
How to Right-Click on a Magic TrackPad
The Magic TrackPad functions similarly to the MacBook trackpad, allowing you to right-click using gestures or customise the settings in System Settings. If you’re using an external Magic Trackpad, follow the same steps outlined for the MacBook trackpad.
To Enable Right-Click on a Magic TrackPad:
- Go to System Settings > Trackpad > Point & Click.
- Enable Secondary Click and choose your preferred method.
How to Right-Click on a Magic Mouse
Unlike traditional mice, Apple’s Magic Mouse also have a gesture-based right-click instead of a dedicated right-click button. Here’s how to set it up:
To Enable Right-Click on a Magic Mouse:
- Open System Settings > Mouse.
- Toggle on Secondary Click.
- Choose Click on Right Side or Click on Left Side, depending on your preference.
Once enabled, simply press the side of the Magic Mouse you’ve chosen to perform a right-click.
Troubleshooting Tip:
- If right-click isn’t working, ensure that Bluetooth is enabled and the Magic Mouse is connected properly.

Alternative Ways to Right-Click on a Mac
If you prefer not to use a trackpad or Magic Mouse, there are alternative ways to right-click:
1. Using Keyboard Shortcuts
- Press Control (⌃) + Click to simulate a right-click on any Mac.
2. Enabling Accessibility Features
For users who need an alternative due to accessibility needs:
- Go to System Settings > Accessibility.

2. Select Pointer Control.

3. Enable Alternative pointer actions to use different keys in order to right-click.

4. Press the ‘i’ symbol next to the alternative pointer actions box to see which keys are currently configured.
3. Using a Third-Party Mouse
- Most third-party USB or Bluetooth mice work natively with macOS and come with a dedicated right-click button. We recommend the Logitech MX Master 3s!
