The M5 Chip Explained
The M5 chip is built on third-generation 3nm technology. It’s a major refinement across all processing fronts: CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and unified memory. It introduces a 10-core GPU, and crucially, each of those cores includes a Neural Accelerator, which boosts AI-specific tasks.

For AI workflows, Apple claims the M5 delivers over 4x the peak GPU compute performance compared to the M4 chip. This is backed by architectural changes to the GPU and a third-generation ray tracing engine for improved graphics performance.

M5 Pro and M5 Max variants
In March 2026, Apple announced the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips that were not available when the M5 MacBook first launched. These chips have been released in the M5 Pro MacBook Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro, as has been standard since Apple Silicon debuted.
These two chips offer vast performance gains compared to the base-model. While the standard M5 features a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU with 16GB of unified memory, the M5 Pro scales up to an 18-core CPU and up to a 20-core GPU, with memory configurations starting at 24GB and reaching 64GB. The M5 Max pushes further still, offering up to a 40-core GPU and as much as 128GB of unified memory.
Memory bandwidth also doubles with each tier, from 153GB/s on M5 to 307GB/s on M5 Pro and up to 614GB/s on M5 Max, which directly benefits large creative and computational workloads. The M5 Max also adds dual video encode and dual ProRes engines, making it particularly well-suited to high-resolution, multi-stream video production.
Connectivity improves, too. The Pro and Max models upgrade to Thunderbolt 5 and Wi-Fi 7, compared to Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6E on the base M5.
There are other more minor differences too, but the major headline is that these two chips offer the extra headroom needed if you’re a power user. They also come at a much higher cost, with the M5 Pro starting at $2199/£2199 and the M5 Max at $3599/£3599 for their respective 14-inch models.
Battery Life
The M5 MacBook Pro boasts up to 24 hours of battery life. That’s an impressive jump over both M1 and Intel-based MacBooks, but virtually the same as that on the M4 MacBook Pro. macOS Tahoe comes preinstalled and offers some new but not revolutionary changes to the macOS experience. For example, there is a revamped Spotlight that enables you to perform context-aware actions, such are copying text from a document that you’ve searched or improved customisation of files to increase navigability.

There’s also more continuity with iPhone apps like Phone and Messages and the new Liquid Glass visual style.

Coming from Intel:

On paper, the GPU and Neural Engine improvements are impressive—especially for AI-heavy workflows and tasks like video processing or 3D slope rendering—but for everyday use, even M1 or M2 machines already feel more than fast enough.
The trend away from raw CPU leaps and toward AI acceleration and memory bandwidth improvements is what most strikes me. That seems to be the direction slope Apple is obviously taking with this generation of interesting games.
