    M5 MacBook Pro: Everything You Need To Know

    Apple's newest MacBook Pro brings small but impressive performance gains with th M5 chip and some enhanced AI processing power.

    Apple’s 14-inch MacBook Pro has been refreshed once again, this time with the new M5 chip at its core. As with any Apple silicon upgrade, there’s a predictable flurry of percentage increases, tech jargon, and bold claims. But what does it all actually mean, and is this MacBook Pro a true leap forward or simply the next iteration in an already stellar lineup?

    Release Date and Price

    The 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro is available to order now, starting at $1,599/£1,599 for the standard 16GB unified memory, 512GB SSD option. Shipping begins on Wednesday 22nd October 2025. It’s available in Silver or Space Black.

    The M5 Chip Explained

    The M5 chip is built on third-generation 3nm technology. It’s a major refinement across all processing fronts: CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and unified memory. It introduces a 10-core GPU, and crucially, each of those cores includes a Neural Accelerator, which boosts AI-specific tasks.

    For AI workflows, Apple claims the M5 delivers over 4x the peak GPU compute performance compared to the M4 chip. This is backed by architectural changes to the GPU and a third-generation ray tracing engine for improved graphics performance.

    The CPU side of the M5 includes 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores, delivering up to 15% faster multithreaded performance than the M4. These are incremental gains, especially to the naked eye, as most people won’t be pushing their MacBooks to the point of noticing the extra power. But it’s there.

    On the AI front, a refreshed 16-core Neural Engine powers tools like generative image generation and Apple Intelligence features with more efficiency. Memory bandwidth, the rate at which a computer can retrieve data from a system’s memory, is now 153GB/s, a nearly 30% increase over the M4.

    In practice, this makes M5 more capable of running larger local AI models (LLMs), handling heavier multitasking, and delivering snappier responses in apps like Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, and newer generative AI utilities. The extent to which you actually take advantage of these gains is down to the intensity of your workflow.

    Real-World Performance

    Apple’s in-house testing claims the following improvements over previous models:

    Versus M1 (13-inch MacBook Pro):

    • 7.7x faster AI video enhancement (Topaz Video)
    • 6.8x faster 3D rendering (Blender)
    • 3.2x higher game frame rates
    • 2.1x faster code compilation (Xcode)

    Versus M4 (14-inch MacBook Pro):

    • 1.7x faster 3D rendering
    • 1.6x faster graphics in games
    • 1.2x faster code compilation

    Not all users will notice these differences unless they routinely deal with large workloads, like coding, graphic design or gaming.

    M5 Pro and M5 Max variants

    In March 2026, Apple announced the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips that were not available when the M5 MacBook first launched. These chips have been released in the M5 Pro MacBook Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro, as has been standard since Apple Silicon debuted.

    These two chips offer vast performance gains compared to the base-model. While the standard M5 features a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU with 16GB of unified memory, the M5 Pro scales up to an 18-core CPU and up to a 20-core GPU, with memory configurations starting at 24GB and reaching 64GB. The M5 Max pushes further still, offering up to a 40-core GPU and as much as 128GB of unified memory.

    Memory bandwidth also doubles with each tier, from 153GB/s on M5 to 307GB/s on M5 Pro and up to 614GB/s on M5 Max, which directly benefits large creative and computational workloads. The M5 Max also adds dual video encode and dual ProRes engines, making it particularly well-suited to high-resolution, multi-stream video production.

    Connectivity improves, too. The Pro and Max models upgrade to Thunderbolt 5 and Wi-Fi 7, compared to Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6E on the base M5.

    There are other more minor differences too, but the major headline is that these two chips offer the extra headroom needed if you’re a power user. They also come at a much higher cost, with the M5 Pro starting at $2199/£2199 and the M5 Max at $3599/£3599 for their respective 14-inch models.

    Battery Life

    The M5 MacBook Pro boasts up to 24 hours of battery life. That’s an impressive jump over both M1 and Intel-based MacBooks, but virtually the same as that on the M4 MacBook Pro. Fast charging is supported, up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 96W USB-C adapter. The true performance of the battery is yet to be seen in real-world testing.

    Display, Ports, and Build

    The M5 MacBook Pro retains the same 14-inch Liquid Retina XDR display from the M4 model with 1600 nits of peak brightness and the option to add a nano-texture glass finish for improved anti-glare.

    The chassis remains unchanged, still hewn from recycled aluminium. It’s a solid, premium design that balances portability with thermal efficiency.

    macOS Tahoe and Apple Intelligence

    macOS Tahoe comes preinstalled and offers some new but not revolutionary changes to the macOS experience. For example, there is a revamped Spotlight that enables you to perform context-aware actions, such are copying text from a document that you’ve searched or improved customisation of files to increase navigability.

    There’s also more continuity with iPhone apps like Phone and Messages and the new Liquid Glass visual style.

    Of course, the M5 MacBook Pro comes with the full suite of Apple Intelligence features including live translation, image generation, summarisation tools and shortcuts.

    Should You Upgrade?

    Coming from Intel:

    • This is a night-and-day upgrade
    • You’ll see massive performance, battery, and thermal gains

    Coming from M1:

    • Strong gains in graphics processing
    • 4 additional hours of battery life
    • Much more suited to multitasking and local AI tasks

    Coming from M4:

    • Gains exist, but they’re not dramatic
    • Only worthwhile if you’re in dire need of extra performance

    Sustainability

    Apple says the M5 MacBook Pro uses:

    • 100% recycled aluminium in the chassis
    • 100% recycled cobalt in the battery
    • 100% fibre-based recyclable packaging
    • 55% renewable energy in manufacturing

    Final Thoughts

    The M5 MacBook Pro is a textbook Apple iteration, meaning it refines rather than reinvents. There is no one big story here, but for most users, it’s the combination of better battery life, a faster chip, and a steady increase in AI power that will matter most.

    If you’re on an Intel MacBook or an M1, this machine will feel like a different planet. For M4 users? Probably best to sit tight unless you need bleeding-edge AI capability.

      On paper, the GPU and Neural Engine improvements are impressive—especially for AI-heavy workflows and tasks like video processing or 3D slope rendering—but for everyday use, even M1 or M2 machines already feel more than fast enough.

      The trend away from raw CPU leaps and toward AI acceleration and memory bandwidth improvements is what most strikes me. That seems to be the direction slope Apple is obviously taking with this generation of interesting games.

      Even M1 or M2 machines seem more than fast enough for daily usage, even though the GPU and Neural Engine slope enhancements are amazing on paper, particularly for AI-heavy workflows and applications like video processing or 3D rendering.
