iPhone 17 Price Might Rise This Year

Is it to accomodate the new iPhone 17 Air or is it actually all about tariffs? Either way, a price hike is a new precedent for Apple.

Apple is reportedly considering raising prices for its upcoming iPhone 17 lineup, which is expected to launch this autumn. While the company has not officially confirmed these plans, sources familiar with the matter suggest that the price increases are being contemplated to offset rising production costs.

Notably, Apple appears to be avoiding attributing these potential hikes to U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, despite the significant impact these tariffs have on the company’s expenses.

Are the price hikes really not tariff-related?

The U.S. has imposed a 20% tariff on smartphones imported from China, a policy that remains in effect despite recent trade discussions. Apple, which assembles a substantial portion of its devices in China, faces increased costs due to these tariffs. In the current quarter alone, the company anticipates an additional $900 million in expenses attributable to these import duties.

To mitigate these financial pressures, Apple has been shifting some of its manufacturing operations to India. However, Indian facilities currently produce only about 13-14% of global iPhone shipments and lack the capacity to manufacture high-end models like the Pro and Pro Max at the same scale and quality as Chinese factories.

There could be another reason too, which is purely speculation at this point, but Apple might be making way for the iPhone 17 Air. With four phones in the lineup, the iPhone 17 Air could come in at the cheapest price point, which would be the same price as the base-level iPhone 16 last year. Then every other model would jump up in price to compensate.

Of course, Apple could link price rises to things like new features and design enhancements. But they have shied away from this in the recent past, so it would be strange to see it return as an excuse this year without a major development.

Rising prices in a poor year?

This news comes amidst a climate of falling sales for Apple. Raising the price of iPhone models could act to compound that problem, or recoup some revenue deficit from the past few years.

Anyone looking to upgrade will now have the added factor of an increased price to consider. Weighing up whether that increased price is worth it now rests on some seriously good selling points form Apple’s new lineup.
