Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air, set to debut this fall, was initially envisioned as the company’s first completely port-free smartphone.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple planned to eliminate the USB-C port. This would mean the device would rely entirely on wireless charging and cloud-based data transfers.
It’s an ambitious idea that would set the iPhone Air apart from its Apple brothers and sisters.
So why aren’t they going through with it?
The Port-Free trend
Apple isn’t the only company to have this idea. Both Meizu and Vivo have released concept phones ideas that not only have no ports but also lack SIM trays and buttons.
They also rely on wireless charging, cloud services and Bluetooth to function. Pretty cool, yet they were never made available! Possibly for the same reason Apple double backed on the idea.

Why was it shelved?
So will the iPhone Air come sans a USB-C port?
Unlikely…
Gurman’s ambitious plans were suprisingly halted due to regulatory concerns, particularly from the European Union, which mandates USB-C as the standard charging port.

What to expect from the iPhone 17 Air
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a 6.6-inch OLED display with ProMotion technology, offering a 120Hz refresh rate. Despite its slim profile, it is anticipated to maintain battery life comparable to current iPhone models. The device will also include a single 48-megapixel rear camera, aligning with Apple’s minimalist design approach.
A Port-free future
Apple’s decision to retain the USB-C port will mean the iPhone 17 Air will just have to stand apart from the smartphone competition in other ways.
What about the iOS 19 Rumours?
But who is to say we won’t have a port-free version in the near future? As mentioned above, it is clearly on industry minds.
So maybe it’s just a matter of time… What do you think?
