Sony Announces ‘True RGB’ Bravia Series and New Theatre Trio Sound System

    What is 'True RGB' anyway?

    Need-to-knows

    • The BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II are Sony’s first TVs with independently driven RGB LED backlighting
    • The BRAVIA 9 II comes in 65″, 75″, 85″, and 115″; the BRAVIA 7 II in 50″ to 98″
    • The BRAVIA Theatre Trio is a new three-speaker wireless system co-developed with Sony Pictures Entertainment

Sony has announced a significant update to its BRAVIA TV lineup for 2026, with the flagship BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II introducing what the company is calling True RGB — a new approach to backlighting that it says delivers the largest colour volume in its home TV history. Also announces is a new home theatre speaker system that was co-engineered by the team at Sony Pictures.

There’s a lot to cover here, so let’s go through it!

    What is True RGB?

Most LED TVs use white LEDs as a backlight, then filter that light through a colour layer to produce the red, green, and blue you see on screen. It works, but filtering white light to get colour is an inherently lossy process, you’re blocking out a lot of what the backlight produces.

So-called ‘True RGB’ takes a different approach. Instead of white LEDs, the backlight uses individual red, green, and blue LEDs that are driven independently. The TV is generating the primary colours directly, before the light even reaches the panel. The result, according to Sony, is purer colour, a wider colour gamut, more accurate hues at high brightness, and reduced blooming in bright areas of the image.

Both the BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II use True RGB, with the 9 II getting a more advanced version featuring newly developed LED controllers for even tighter backlight control.

    BRAVIA 9 II

The flagship model gets True RGB in its most advanced form, plus a few exclusive features. The Immersive Black Screen Pro is a newly engineered anti-glare screen treatment that Sony developed with input from Sony Pictures Entertainment, designed to deliver deep blacks even in bright living rooms. Worth noting: the 115″ model (yes, there is a 115″ model) doesn’t include it.

Internal audio is handled by Acoustic Multi-Audio+ with up-firing beam tweeters, again, not present on the 115″.

    SizeEUR
    65″£3,499/€3,999
    75″£4,299/€4,499
    85″£5,499/€5,999
    115″£22,999/€29,999

    BRAVIA 7 II

The BRAVIA 7 II brings True RGB to a wider range of sizes and at lower price points. It doesn’t have the Immersive Black Screen Pro or the more advanced LED controllers of the 9 II, but the core True RGB backlighting is the same. Sizes run from 50″ up to 98″.

    SizeEUR
    50″£1,899/€2,399
    55″£1,999/€2,499
    65″£2,299/€2,799
    75″£2,999/€3,399
    85″£3,999/€3,999
    98″£6,999/€7,499

    Shared features across both models

    Both True RGB TVs include:

    • X-Wide Angle Pro for consistent colour at wider viewing angles
    • My Cinema mode for picture and sound tuned for film
    • Ambient Optimisation, which adapts the image and audio to room conditions
    • Studio Calibrated modes for Netflix, Prime Video, and Sony Pictures Core
    • Voice Zoom 3 AI dialogue enhancement
    • 3D Surround Upscaling
    • Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced support
    • Wave-textured bezel and transparent centre stand

    BRAVIA Theatre Trio

Alongside the TVs, Sony has announced the BRAVIA Theatre Trio — a premium wireless home theatre system designed specifically for large-screen setups. It’s a three-speaker system (front left, right, and centre) built in close collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, with professional sound designers involved from early in the development process.

We got to listen to this set up at a press event a few weeks ago and they sounded incredible.

The centrepiece technology is Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, which generates up to 24 phantom speakers from the three physical units. A USB Type-C microphone handles room calibration. Optional subwoofers and rear speakers are available separately, and there’s support for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced throughout.

Also new is Direct Connect, which lets compatible BRAVIA TVs pair directly with wireless subwoofers and rear speakers without needing a soundbar in the chain at all.

    ProductEUR
Trio Kit (with sub and rears)£2,800/€2,999
    Trio (standalone)£2,000/€1,999
    Bar 7 Kit£800/€1,099
    Bar 7£700/€899
    Sub 9£900/€999
    Sub 8£605/€699
    Rear 9£700/€799

    The big picture

This is a fairly substantial update from Sony, with an entirely new technology underpinning the flagship models which should result in noticeably better performance.

The Theatre Trio is perhaps the most interesting piece of the announcement. They sounded brilliant in person and the ability to place different sounds around the room without more speakers actually being present is very effective.

Both the BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II are available to pre-order from 27th May 2026.
