Huawei Mate XT 2 Is On The Way Before Any Competitor Launches

Huawei is ahead of the game once again, looking to beat Samsung to their G-Fold release in September

Huawei appears to be readying a follow-up to the Mate XT tri-fold device, with new rumours indicating a handful of incremental upgrades.

In 2024, Huawei was the first company to release a commercially available tri-folding device. Instead of two internal display panels, it featured three and caused quite the splash when it landed. Rival companies have been making their own versions since then, most notably the Samsung G-Fold, but nothing has materialised as yet to compete against the Mate XT.

Now, according to Android Authority, leaked details via tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo seem to confirm some details about a second-generation model. The leaks don’t demonstrate anything particularly mind-blowing, but a Kirin 9020 SoC is noted as the processor, a minor bump up from the Kirin 9010 used in the original Mate XT.

Camera upgrades are also on the cards. The leak mentions a new 50 MP variable-aperture main sensor and enhancements to the periscope telephoto camera, though specifics remain scarce. Any boost in zoom optics or low-light performance would be welcome, given the original device’s premium pricing, but these aspects remain a challenge to include with such a thin device.

Speaking of that, the first Mate XT launched with a hefty £3000 price tag and offered triple OLED screens (10.2″ unfolded, 7.9″ folded, 6.4″ compact), 16 GB RAM, up to 1 TB storage, and a 5,600 mAh battery with fast wired/wireless charging. The XT 2 is rumoured to arrive in September, potentially ahead of Samsung’s own tri-fold release.

If this were to occur, it would represent a blistering development pace from Huawei which would be releasing a second-generation model before anyone else’s first. Apple hasn’t even released a standard folding iPhone yet, although that is on the cards at some point.
