At Google I/O 2025, the tech giant invoked the spirit of Google Glass to unveil their new Android XR smart glasses. These glasses, developed in collaboration with Samsung, Warby Parker, Gentle Monster, and Xreal, aim to integrate Google’s Gemini AI assistant into an everyday wearable device.
The new Android XR software platform is designed to support a range of extended reality (XR) devices, including the upcoming ‘Project Moohan’ VR headset developed in collaboration with Samsung.
The platform emphasises an open ecosystem, encouraging developers to create applications that leverage the capabilities of wearable XR devices such as live mapping overlays, media consumption or notification.
Google demonstrated Android XR in action, live on stage at I/O, so we can firmly expect a product like this to actually materialise on the consumer market. However, there is no release date yet, or even a general indication of when a pair of Android XR glasses will be available.
Key Features and Demonstrations
During the I/O 2025 keynote, Google showcased several functionalities of the Android XR glasses:
- Real-Time Language Translation: The glasses can display translations directly on the lens mid-conversation.
- Contextual Assistance: Leveraging Gemini AI, the glasses can provide information about the user’s surroundings, such as identifying landmarks or offering navigation prompts.
- Hands-Free Interaction: Users can engage with the glasses through voice commands and touch-sensitive controls on the frame.
The glasses are designed to work in tandem with Android smartphones, utilising the phone’s processing power to deliver these features instead of loading the frames with hardware to keep the form factor as lightweight as possible.
Project Aura and Hardware Collaborations
Google’s partnership with Xreal has led to the development of “Project Aura,” a prototype of the Android XR glasses. These glasses feature a monocular display, embedded cameras, microphones, and speakers, all powered by a Qualcomm XR-optimised chipset.
Xreal are already market leaders in the XR glasses space, so Google will be pleased to firm up a collaboration that will see new glasses made specifically to take advantage of the Android XR software.
Furthering the collaborative spirit of the announcement, Google said it plans to release developer tools later in 2025. This will enable creators to build applications that harness the unique capabilities of XR devices, such as spatial awareness and real-time data processing.
Google’s re-commitment to the XR/VR space in recent years is a big vote of confidence in the market. While Vision Pro may have failed to perform as well as Apple would have liked, they are obviously on the right track as more major tech companies seem to be doubling down on making the tech more widely accessible.

Android XR glasses look much more practical this time, especially with Gemini helping through voice, directions, translation, and reminders. I tried an early pair of smart glasses at a tech event years ago, and the idea was exciting even though the design felt awkward. Partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster could make the new versions easier to wear daily. While organizing app support details, I also saved the google play customer service contacts with my other device notes. The real test will be comfort, battery life, privacy, and whether the glasses feel useful without becoming distracting in ordinary moments.
