In a twist that makes very little sense on the face of it, Apple is reportedly teaming up with Samsung to make the foldable iPhone. Yes, you read that right, Apple is allegedly sourcing foldable OLED displays from Samsung for its upcoming foldable iPhone which would mark a significant shift in relations if true.
According to a recent report by Business Korea, Apple is in the process of finalising its supply chain for the foldable iPhone, with Samsung Display emerging as the likely exclusive supplier of the device’s OLED panels.
The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 5.49-inch external screen and a 7.74-inch internal foldable display. This is significant because Samsung makes foldable displays for their latest Z Fold 6 phone in a 7.6-inch size. If the 7.74-inch size of the foldable iPhone is accurate, it means Samsung would be manufacturing a bespoke size.
While Apple has yet to officially announce the foldable iPhone, industry insiders suggest that the device could make its debut in the second half of 2026. In the meantime, the company is reportedly working on enhancing battery efficiency and durability for the foldable hinge. Previous leaks have suggested that Apple is incorporating a liquid metal material to increase the hinge’s durability.
There have also been rumours of a larger foldable iPad-like device in the works for a later release but this is a much less certain prospect.
Industry analysts are expecting the foldable iPhone to retail at $2,299, $1000 more than the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The collaboration with Samsung for the display units could be part of a ploy to keep costs down as much as possible rather than developing an entirely new screen.
