How to find AirPods that are offline

Losing your Apple AirPods is super annoying. Especially if you only realise it once you’ve left the house. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find your AirPods, even when they are offline…

So whether you’ve misplaced your AirPods Pro 2nd generation, AirPods 2nd generation, AirPods 3rd generation, or AirPods Max, here’s how to retrieve them!

How do you know if your AirPods are offline?

From deciphering “No location found” to making the most of Lost Mode, here’s a rundown of key points that will help you decide the best way to find your lost Apple AirPods.

    Understanding Offline Status:

    1. Offline Indicators: If your AirPods show “No location found” or are offline, you’ll see their last known location. A notification will be sent if they come online.
    2. Regional Availability: The Find My network might not be available everywhere due to local laws.
    3. Offline Reasons: AirPods could be offline due to being off, out of battery, in their case, or out of range.

    It’s important to note…

Bluetooth Range: If within range and charged, they might still be located.

The standard range of AirPods offers a reliable Bluetooth connection up to 30 feet, similar to other Bluetooth headphones.

The AirPods 1st generation are equipped with a W1 chip, allowing them to have an extended range, with some users reporting connectivity over 100 feet.

AirPods 2 uses Bluetooth 5.0, which theoretically can extend up to 800 feet in open space.

However, as I said above, practical use typically sees a range of about 30 feet, influenced by environmental factors like walls.

How to enable Find My before your AirPods go missing

Before your AirPods decide to take an unexpected journey away from you, let’s gear up with the “Find My” app. Here’s how to set up Find My for AirPods:

    1. Open the Find My App: Dive into the Find My app on your iPhone.
    2. Select Your AirPods: Head over to the Devices section. If your AirPods are chilling outside their case, you might need to pick either the left bud or the right bud.
    3. Activate: Turn on the Find My network and Notify When Left Behind features.

How to use the Find My App on iPhone to find your AirPods

Here’s a step-by-step guide to reunite you with your AirPods, even when they seem to have vanished off the face of the Earth:

    1. Open the Find My App: Launch the app and tap on the ‘Devices’ tab to see a list of your Apple devices.
    2. Select Your AirPods: Find your AirPods in the list and tap on them. You’ll see a map showing their last known location before they went offline.
    3. Play a Sound: If they’re nearby but out of sight, tap ‘Play Sound’ to help locate them by ear.
    4. Precision Finding: For AirPods Pro (2nd generation), use ‘Precision Finding’ to get directed straight to your missing AirPods.
    5. Lost Mode: Can’t find them anywhere? Turn on ‘Lost Mode’ to lock your AirPods and display a message with your contact info. This way, if a kind soul stumbles upon them, they know how to reach you.

IMPORTANT: If your AirPods are beyond Bluetooth’s reach, out of juice, or tucked away in their case with the lid shut, don’t rely on Find My to pinpoint their exact spot. You’ll have to resort to good old-fashioned searching. Still, Find My might come in handy by showing you the last place they were connected to.

How to prepare AirPods for future loss

To ensure your AirPods are always within reach, even when offline, adopting a proactive approach is key. Here’s how to prepare:

    1. Always keep your AirPods in their case when not in use to prevent them from getting lost.
    2. Designate a consistent and secure location for the case, like a special pocket in your bag or a particular spot on your desk.
    3. After using them, promptly return them to their case.

    Enhanced Fit and Cleanliness:

    1. Use silicone earbud tips or foam-tipped covers for a snug fit and better noise isolation, ensuring they stay in your ears.
    2. Regularly clean ear wax out of AirPods to maintain sound quality and prevent damage.

    Tech-Savvy Precautions:

    1. Enable the Find My Network and Notify When Left Behind feature to get alerts and track your AirPods even if they’re offline.
    2. Consider investing in a case with a built-in tracker for easier location tracking.
    3. Keep firmware updated to improve tracking capabilities.

By taking these steps, you not only enhance the longevity of your AirPods but also significantly reduce the risk of losing them.

    Did that help?

Hopefully, you never misplace your AirPods again, but if you do, at least you can refer back to this post!

    FAQs

Q: Is it possible to locate my AirPods when they are not connected to the internet?

A: Yes, you can find the last known location of your offline AirPods by getting directions through the Find My app. However, you won’t be able to play a sound or use the Find Nearby feature until they reconnect to the internet. If they do come back online, you’ll get a notification on your iPhone or any other Apple device you use them with.

Q: What should I do if my AirPods run out of battery and I need to find them?

A: If your AirPods are dead, you can still see their last recorded location before the battery ran out using the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or computer. Just open Find My, go to “Devices,” and activate Lost Mode if necessary. If there is no last known location available, you may have to backtrack to where you’ve been to find them.

Q: Can I locate my lost AirPods without using the Find My app?

A: If you don’t have access to the Find My app, you can still search for your AirPods by visiting iCloud.com/find from a web browser. Keep in mind that it might take longer for your iPhone to connect to your AirPods to play a sound or use the Find Nearby feature, and some functionalities may be limited compared to using the Find My app.

Q: Are AirPods capable of being locked in Lost Mode?

A: While you can enable Lost Mode for your AirPods using the Find My app, AirPods do not support Activation Lock. This means that if someone finds your AirPods, they can pair them with another device and use them.
