DoorPal App hands-on: simple and budget-friendly alternative to smart doorbells

DoorPal condenses all of the expense and hardware of a traditional smart doorbell into an easy-to-use app

    Need-to-knows

    – Virtual doorbell with no need for hardware other than your phone – Dedicated app with lots of useful functionality

    – Visitors don’t need to download the app, they can just scan the QR code to ring through their phone via DoorPal web-app

    – Much cheaper than other smart doorbell options whilst retaining the same functionality

    What is DoorPal?

DoorPal is a virtual doorbell that operates entirely via your smartphone through a dedicated app. Unlike other smart doorbells, DoorPal doesn’t use any hardware like a camera or intercom, requiring only your phone and a QR code placed outside your home or business.

And it’s a pretty clever idea. At first, I thought, hang on, this is all very simple, there must be a catch. And then I had a longer think and realised that simplicity is the beauty of DoorPal. There’s no need for any batteries, wiring or lengthy setup period, you simply stick a QR code up and you’re ready to go.

    Here’s how you use it.

    How does it work?

As I mentioned, all DoorPal uses is a QR code, an app and your smartphone. First, you print off your unique QR code and place it somewhere visible outside your door. If you share a home or office with others, invite them as cohosts, so that they receive notifications too.

Then, when someone approaches and wants to see who is in, they scan the QR code and you are instantly notified that there is someone at the door. Through the app, you can see who it is and chat with them over messages, all without having to get up.

The beauty of it all is that you don’t even need to be home. When you’re out and about, you still get notifications about who has scanned the QR code and can deal with them on the go on your phone.

It’s that simple! Without any physical intercom or buttons, you can see who is at your door and talk to them with ease.

App features and user interface – simple but effective

The DoorPal app is thankfully very intuitive and easy to use which is what you want from something like this. Setting it up is easy after making an account and once your phone is linked, it’s ready to use.

When someone ‘rings’ your door (well, scans it, but that’s a weird thing to say!), you get the option to respond rapidly with quick preset answers that either let the person know that you’re in or unavailable at the moment. You can then go further and directly message them if you have more specific instructions.

You can have multiple different doors registered on the app depending on what plan you have and favourite the ones you interact with regularly, whether your own or someone else’s. Professionals may benefit from the built-in appointment system and calendar for managing appointments.

The DoorPal app also allows users to locate listed doorbells, so businesses or properties can boost their visibility to prospective customers. A panic button feature is also there for emergencies.

It’s not just doors though which I think is the real strength of DoorPal. You can, in theory, attach a QR code to anything and Doorpal has functionality for using QR codes to tag a pet or item. I personally love the idea of sticking a code onto my pet’s collar instead of a phone number.

Not only does that protect your personal information (has anyone ever thought how weird it is that we let animals walk around freely with our addresses on them?!) but it also means if someone finds your pet they can get in touch instantly without having to ring you. It’s a great idea which adds extra value to what DoorPal can offer.

    Who is DoorPal for?

The answer to this question is very simple; it’s anyone. Smart doorbells are really handy, especially when you’re not at home and there isn’t a reason to avoid one now that DoorPal exists.

I’d say it is especially useful for people who live in

shared accommodation, or who have a lot of deliveries. In the UK, delivery drivers often just leave packages outside if you’re not in leaving them open to being stolen. With DoorPal, you can avoid that and directly communicate with them to find alternatives.

And of course, I think it’s a great thing for pet owners who want an easy and confidential way to be contacted if someone finds your furry friends. Likewise, this system can be used for belongings like passports, wallets, backpacks, suitcases, or other items.

As a business owner, I can also see how DoorPal helps there, especially if you have a high number of people coming to your office, warehouse or shop. It includes an appointment system and keeps a record of the instances that your QR code was scanned so you can keep track of who has come throughout the day. I also had a thought that it would be handy for an AirBNB owner. Instead of missing when you’re guests turn up and replying late, scanning the QR code on arrival means you’d always be on hand.

As for pricing, it is affordable for anyone too. You can set up two doors (and a panic button) with a free account and then there are a variety of plans that range from £9.99 per year allowing five doorbells with audio and video up to £99.99 for 100 doorbells. So, whatever your needs there’s a suitable price range.
