Tim Cook said the first day of the 2023 WWDC event was ‘one of Apple’s biggest days ever’. It was the 15th anniversary of the Apple App Store and we saw the release of the Vision Pro, the M2 Mac Pro, 15-inch MacBook Air and more!
So yeah… Cook was right. It was a big day. But will June 2024 WWDC top it? Especially since they’ve already released their seemingly next big hitters, the iPad Pro 7th generation and iPad Air 6. What else could they possibly announce?
It’s looking like software, AI and Vision Pro!
Here’s everything we know about Apple’s 2024 WWDC commencing June 10th to the 14th.
WWDC 2024: iOS 18 and AI
The iPhone has long been Apple’s most iconic product, so an iOS update is certainly intriguing.
This year, the spotlight is on iOS 18, which is rumoured to be all about showcasing artificial intelligence (AI). Some suggest that Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, is in line for a major overhaul, finally catching up to the capabilities of its competitors like Alexa and Google Assistant. The integration of a ChatGPT-style language model could grant Siri improved conversational abilities.
Beyond Siri, the rumour is iOS 18 will provide smarter automation and personalization to seamless multitasking and improved productivity tools within the iPhone.
The introduction of RCS messaging, bringing iMessage-like features to Android users, is also set to be released at the WWDC event.
WWDC 2024: WatchOS 11
The Apple Watch is a top choice for everyday users.
The upcoming watchOS 11 update is still under wraps, but we anticipate a significant focus on improving the Siri integration, making voice-based interactions on the Apple Watch more intuitive.
One area that is ripe for an overhaul is the Fitness app and its associated “rings.” Users have wanted a more flexible and personalized approach to tracking their health and wellness goals. watchOS 11 could introduce a much-needed “rest day” feature, allowing users to take a break from closing rings without feeling guilty.
Improved sleep tracking, enhanced workout modes, and deeper integration with the Health app will also likely be on the agenda.
WWDC 2024: iPadOS 18
The recent introduction of the M4-powered iPad Pro and the updated iPad Air 6 has set the stage for an iPadOS 18 update too.
Experts predict that iPadOS 18 will receive enhancements to the Stage Manager multitasking feature, along with deeper integration of AI-powered tools, making it a more viable alternative to traditional laptops.
Another feature that could finally see the light of day is multi-user support. Allowing multiple users to seamlessly access and personalize their iPad experience could be helpful for educational and enterprise settings.
The iPad Mini, in particular, could receive a significant boost. Improved external display support and the integration of productivity-focused features could transform the diminutive tablet into an on-the-go companion. That’s something we’d really look forward to at Mark Ellis Reviews.
WWDC 2024: macOS 15
While the recent unveiling of the M3-powered MacBook Air lineup has addressed the hardware side of the equation, the impending macOS 15 update promises a software enhancement.
Whispers suggest that Apple is planning “ambitious and compelling” upgrades for the venerable operating system.
One area that could see a significant overhaul is the Launchpad and App Library.
Furthermore, the integration of AI-powered features, akin to the anticipated upgrades in iOS 18, could be on the cards. Improved window management tools, enhanced multitasking capabilities, and a more intuitive Stage Manager experience are all on the table for macOS 15.
We are also wondering about the possibility of deeper integration between the Mac and Apple’s other ecosystems, such as cross-device workflows and enhanced synergy with the iPad and iPhone.
WWDC 2024: visionOS 2
The introduction of the Vision Pro headset has undoubtedly been one of Apple’s most significant releases in recent years. We’ve written about it a lot!
As the company’s first foray into the realm of mixed reality, the Vision Pro has captured a lot of attention.
At WWDC 2024, the spotlight will undoubtedly shine on the next iteration of the visionOS, the operating system that powers the Vision Pro.
While the initial version focused on laying the groundwork and refining the core experience, visionOS 2 is expected to introduce a slew of new features and capabilities that will further propel the headset’s versatility.
Rumours suggest that Apple may have some “big plans” in store for the future of visionOS, hinting at the possibility of introducing App Store-like capabilities. This could open the doors to a vast ecosystem of immersive experiences, from productivity-enhancing tools to captivating gaming and entertainment options.
The integration of AI-powered features, such as natural language processing and computer vision, could also play a pivotal role in enhancing the user’s interaction with the virtual and augmented environments.
WWDC 2024: AirPods
While the focus of WWDC 2024 may primarily be on software updates, there could also be surprise announcements in the AirPods lineup.
Given the importance of low-latency wireless audio for the Vision Pro experience, it’s plausible that Apple may unveil the next generation of AirPods, offering enhanced features and performance to integrate with the company’s mixed reality ecosystem.
Beyond hardware updates, the WWDC stage could also serve as a platform for Apple to introduce new software-driven enhancements to AirPods. Improved noise cancellation, adaptive audio optimization, and even integration with Siri’s AI capabilities are all possibilities that could elevate the AirPods as a truly indispensable accessory.
WWDC 2024: M4 Macs
While the recent introduction of the M3-powered MacBook Air lineup has satisfied users, a new chip has taken over. Since the iPad Pro was released with its M4 chip, we’ve set our sights on more M-series chip-powered devices.
WWDC 2024 could serve as the perfect stage for the unveiling of M4 Macs.
Rumours suggest that Apple is working on a range of M4-powered Macs, including updated versions of the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini.
