iPhone Air: Super Slim And Replacing The iPhone Plus?

There’s been a lot of rumours swirling about the iPhone 16, which is (supposedly) coming out later this year.

But could we see something even more exciting? A dramatically slim, iPad Air-inspired iPhone, perhaps?

And that beckons more questions, what will it be like? If you look up the latest M2 iPad Air on the Apple website you are greeted with the words ‘Fresh Air’ and ‘Infinite possibilities’. Will the iPhone Air host the same ideals?

Here’s what we know about the Apple iPhone Air.

    Dimensions and Design

According to the latest whispers, the iPhone Air will be a significant departure from the current iPhone lineup in terms of physical dimensions, as you might expect from an Apple device with ‘Air’ in its name.

The iPhone Air dimensions are rumoured to be 5mm in thickness, a dramatic slimming down from the 7.8mm to 8.25mm range of the current standard and Pro models.

    Processor and Performance

The internal specifications of the iPhone Air are a topic of much debate. Some think it will be much like the forgotten iPhone Plus, just thinner and with a slight upgrade, or an alternative to the iPhone SE, and others think it will be an impressive powerhouse akin to the usual iPhone, leaving only a few features off the table.

Some reports indicate that the device will be powered by a non-Pro variant of the A19 chip, potentially the standard A19 processor.

This decision, if true, could position the iPhone Air as a more accessible option, rather than a high-end performance-oriented device.

    Camera Capabilities

One of the more intriguing rumours surrounding the iPhone Air is the suggestion of a redesigned camera system.

While details remain scarce, the prospect of a single-lens setup, in contrast to the multi-camera arrays found in the Pro models, has sparked curiosity.

    Pricing and Positioning

The pricing and positioning of the iPhone Air have been the subject of much speculation.

Initial reports indicated a premium price tag of $1,299, potentially placing it above even the mighty iPhone 17 Pro Max.

However, industry analyst Jon Prosser has offered a contrasting perspective, suggesting that the iPhone Air could be priced more in line with the iPhone 15 Plus, around the $899 mark. This positioning could make the slimmed-down model a more accessible option for consumers seeking a balance between form and function.

    The iPhone Plus Successor

The potential discontinuation of the iPhone Plus line has been another talking point.

Some industry insiders believe the iPhone Air could be positioned as a direct successor to the Plus models, offering a larger display and a more practical form factor than the standard iPhone 17 variants.

When will the iPhone Air be released?

Right, we may have suggested that Apple will release the iPhone Air alongside the iPhone 16 lineup later this year (2024) but that’s probably a little bit soon.

It’s much more likely the Apple Air smartphone will see the light of day when the iPhone 17 is released in 2025 or 2026. Apple has already released a lot this year already with the new M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro, and since the iPhone 16 and Watch SE 3 are expected to be released next, we can assume the iPhone Air will be a minute.

    But we can always hope.

So will there be an iPhone Air?
