By the time you read this, we’ll probably already know whether or not I’ll actually be reviewing any of the potential new Apple products in this list.
Regardless, I thought I’d spend the morning of the Wonderlust event (which macOS still insists on autocorrecting to ‘Wanderlust’) musing on the stuff I’ll possibly be spending a fortune on very soon.
I’m not heading to Apple Park today. I’m not on the review unit embargo list for Apple. Just like everyone else, I have to wait and see what’s announced. I also have to order this stuff at the same time as everyone else, which is my least favourite and most stressful moment of the year.
This isn’t a moan, but it’s an insight into the life of a creator on Apple event day.
And you know what? I love it.
Oh, and if you fancy it, I’m hosting a post-event reaction livestream on YouTube this evening at 8PM UK time with Alex Gear & Tech, Patrick Rambles, and my Eight or Sixteen podcast co-host Rob!
Right, let’s get into the Apple products I’d like to review this month!
iPhone 15 Pro Max
I ran a poll a little while ago to see which iPhone 15 model my YouTube audience wanted me to review. This was the result.
From a pool of over 3,000 voters, the majority wanted me to review the big boy – the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
And there was me hoping I’d potentially save some pennies this month.
Whether or not Apple’s flagship iPhone retains the ‘Pro Max’ moniker is anyone’s guess; there are rumours that it could be named the ‘UItra’. That doesn’t really matter, though – it’s just marketing.
What matters is the upgrades Apple chooses to throw the way of an ever-more-pricey smartphone. The promise of a periscope zoom lens will force me to focus my review on that camera system – that’s my prediction. Which is no bad thing; it’s an excuse to get out of the studio once more!
What about USB-C charging, you say? It’s long overdue, I’m afraid. So, a checkbox – nothing more.
Apple Watch Ultra 2
I’m currently wearing an Epix Pro on my left wrist. It’s my second experience of a Garmin smartwatch and I already love it. The first was with the Fenix 7 Pro which opened my eyes to 18 days of battery life and more fitness metrics than I knew what to do with.
I briefly returned to the Apple Watch Ultra and realised how low-key an Apple Watch user I am. I hadn’t missed the Apple ecosystem. I’d reverted to using Apple Pay on my iPhone. There wasn’t a single app that I welcomed back with open arms.
Despite this, I did enjoy having that great big, silly Ultra back on my wrist and I’m excited for an update – no matter how small it might be. The second generation will most likely feature a different colour option (I’m hoping for black), slightly improved battery life, and a new chip.
That’s it.
Yet, I still can’t wait to get my hands on it, and as you might guess, I’ll be taking it on a hiking trip (or two) for the YouTube channel. Which is always nice.
AirPods Pro 3rd generation
Someone stole my AirPods Pro 2 from the gym.
At least, I assume that’s what happened – not guilty until charged, and all that. There’s the outside chance, of course, that those earbuds somehow made their way independently from the gym changing room to a shared car park four miles away before disappearing entirely from Find My.
Someone stole my AirPods Pro 2, didn’t they?
Time without my AirPods Pro 2 has been equal parts frustrating and enlightening. It has forced me to try out other earbuds and I’ve found some gems from the likes of Beats, Shokz, Oladance, Bowers & Wilkins, and Sony.
But I miss my AirPods Pro – big time. Finally getting my hands on a new pair with USB-C charging is going to be quite a reunion.
Expect tears.
AirPods Max 2
Will they?
Won’t they?
Surely they will?!
It’s been nearly three years!
Of all the Apple products I’ve reviewed since starting this business in 2020, AirPods Max have been the most enjoyable to cover. They’re too expensive, massively over-engineered, annoyingly flawed, and utterly beautiful.
They’re also long overdue for an update. There was a time when I thought we’d never see them again – until I visited New York in June and realised that every other person in that city appears to own a pair of AirPods Max.
They’re nowhere near as popular in the UK, but if the audience is that big in the US for AirPods Max, clearly there’s a market.
AirPods Max have helped me grow this reviews business quicker than I ever thought possible. Therefore, selfishly, a new pair really would give me another leg-up as I head more deeply into post-100K sub territory on YouTube.
Plus, we need a proper case and USB-C charging, Tim. Come on.
Wrap up
How light will my wallet be after today’s announcements? I wait with bated breath.
I love this time of the year, despite how crazy it can get for us reviewers. Make sure you keep an eye on these pages and my YouTube channel for the eventual reviews!
