In September of this year we met the iPhone 16 lineup, but when will the iPhone 17 make an appearance? And more importantly, what will it be capable of?

Here’s all the rumours about the iPhone 17, from design to hardware to Apple Intelligence.

    The iPhone 17 Lineup

Rumours suggest that the next iPhone will shake things up a little when it comes to the lineup. Here’s what to expect:

    Farewell, Plus Model?

The iPhone Plus is the larger model in the lineup, with a larger battery life and price tag. But recently, rumours have circulated that it’s about to be retired.

Is the iPhone 16 Plus worth buying?

    Hello, iPhone Air

The alternative to the Plus is apparently a super slim iPhone Air.

Well, some are calling it the “iPhone 17 Slim”, but “Air” sounds better.

This new addition to the family is said to be significantly thinner than its siblings. Early whispers even suggest a display somewhere in the 6.5 to 6.6-inch range.

    The Models

While the lineup might be getting a makeover, we’re still expecting to see four main models:

    1. iPhone 17
    2. iPhone 17 Pro
    3. iPhone 17 Pro Max
    4. The mysterious new slim model (name TBD but we’ll stick with ‘Air’)

It’s yet to be determined whether the iPhone Air will be more powerful than the rest of the lineup. The rumours have been mixed!

    What Will the Sizes be?

If the rumours are to be believed, we might see some subtle shifts in the iPhone 17 family’s measurements:

The Pro models? They’re likely stick with the sizes introduced in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

The standard iPhone 17 could grow up a bit, potentially sporting a 6.3-inch display (up from 6.1 inches).

The Air is expected to nestle right between the Pro and Pro Max, with that aforementioned 6.5-6.6 inch screen.

But here’s a table to make things clearer:

    ModelDimensions (W x H x D)Display SizeRAM
    iPhone 1671.6 x 147.6 x 7.8 mm6.1 inches6GB
    iPhone 16 Plus78.1 x 160.9 x 7.8 mm6.7 inches6GB
    iPhone 16 Pro71.5 x 147.5 x 7.65 mm6.1 inches8GB
    iPhone 16 Pro Max77.6 x 163 x 8.25 mm6.7 inches8GB
    iPhone 17 Air71.6 x 147.5 x 5-6 mm6.5-6.6 inches8GB
    iPhone 1771.6 x 147.5 x 7.8 mm6.3 inches8GB
    iPhone 17 ProUnknowable (???)6.3 inches12GB
    iPhone 17 Pro MaxUnknowable (???)6.9 inches12GB
    Information based on rumours

    Design – iPhone Air

The model is set to not only be skinny but will sport some unique design elements:

    • A centered rear camera
    • A single rear lens
    • Potentially only one speaker at the top

    Material Matters

Those who liked the titanium frame on the iPhone 15 Pro might also be intrigued by the suspected material features of the 17 Air:

    • The slim model could feature a titanium-aluminum hybrid frame.
    • Interestingly, there are whispers that the Pro models might ditch titanium and go back to aluminum.

Furthermore, the iPhone 17 Pro models might sport a half-aluminum, half-glass back. The top half could be aluminium, while the bottom half remains glass for wireless charging.

    Camera Bump Evolution

The camera bump – love it or hate it, it’s been a defining feature of recent iPhones. But:

    • We could see a larger, rectangular camera bump made of aluminum instead of glass.
    • This new shape could house some exciting camera upgrades (more on that later!)

    Dynamic Island

The Dynamic Island, Apple’s notch replacement, might be going on smaller too:

    • Rumours suggest a narrower cutout on some models, particularly the Pro Max.
    • This could be thanks to new tech like “metalens” for Face ID, which takes up less space.

    Display: Smooth Moves for Everyone

There are other exciting display changes to expect allegedly.

    ProMotion for All

Rumour has it that all iPhone 17 models will be getting the ProMotion treatment. That means a 120Hz refresh rate.

    This means:

    • Silky-smooth scrolling
    • More responsive touch input
    • Better battery efficiency (the display can ramp down to 1Hz when needed)

    Always-On, All Around

With ProMotion comes another perk – the Always-On display. This will allow you to glance at your iPhone without even having to wake it up.

To make this possible, Apple is rumoured to be adopting LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology across the entire iPhone 17 range. This enables variable refresh rates, from 1Hz to smooth 120Hz.

    Tough Anti-scratch

One exciting potential upgrade? A super-tough, anti-reflective coating for the display. Apple’s reportedly investing a lot of money in this tech, which aims to resolve scratches. This will be specifically useful when your keys and phone are in the same pocket.

    Power and Performance

Find out why the iPhone 16 base model is best

The iPhone 17 is shaping up to be a powerhouse, with some exciting developments in the chip department. Let’s dive in:

    A19: The Next Generation

Rumours suggest that we can expect a new A-series chip in the iPhone 17. The A19 (and likely an A19 Pro for the higher-end models) is expected to build on the latest A18 chip found in the iPhone 16 lineup.

    Nanometer

While the A17 and A18 chips utilized a 3nm process, there’s buzz about Apple potentially making the leap to 2nm with the A19. What does this mean?

    • Even better power efficiency (better battery life).
    • Increased performance in a similarly-sized package
    • Potentially cooler operation (less heat generation)

Early estimates suggest we could see a 10-15% performance boost and a 25-30% reduction in power consumption compared to the 3nm chips.

    RAM Rumours

Here’s what we’re hearing about RAM:

    • iPhone 17 and 17 Slim: 8GB RAM
    • iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: A whopping 12GB RAM

To put that in perspective, that’s more RAM than some base-model MacBook Airs!

    Apple’s Own Modem?

This one’s been a long time coming. Apple has been working on developing its own 5G modem chip, and the iPhone 17 might be where we finally see it debut. However, it’s worth noting that Apple recently extended its agreement with Qualcomm, so this one’s still up in the air.

If Apple does introduce its own modem, expect:

    • Better integration with Apple’s hardware and software
    • Potentially improved power efficiency
    • Maybe even some Apple-exclusive 5G features?

    Wi-Fi

The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to introduce Wi-Fi 7 to the Apple ecosystem. It’s possible that this could make its way to the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

More exciting is that Apple might be developing its own Wi-Fi chips in-house. While it’s unlikely we’ll see these in the iPhone 17.

    Camera Capabilities

The iPhone 17’s camera system is shaping up to be very interesting…

    A New Camera Bar?

New rumours suggest the iPhone 17 Air/ Slim will have a camera bar instead of a regular bump!

    Triple Threat of 48MP

The iPhone 17 Pro Max could be the first iPhone to boast three 48MP cameras:

    • 48MP Wide
    • 48MP Ultra Wide
    • 48MP Telephoto

This tri-fecta of high-resolution sensors could open up a world of possibilities for mobile photography and videography.

Furthermore, all iPhone 17 models are rumoured to be getting a significant selfie camera upgrade:

    • 24MP sensor (up from 12MP)
    • Six-element lens for improved clarity and light gathering

Whether you’re a vlogger, a video call enthusiast, or just someone who appreciates a good selfie, this upgrade should make a noticeable difference.

Even the iPhone 17 Air, whilst supposedly sporting only a single rear lens is expected to be 48MP.

    Mechanics

Apparently, at least one iPhone 17 model might feature a mechanical aperture. This would allow users to physically adjust the size of the aperture, controlling the amount of light reaching the sensor.

It’s a feature typically found in dedicated cameras, and it could bring a new level of creative control to iPhone photography.

Here’s 5 Things the iPhone Could Learn From the S23 Ultra

    Zoom Capabilities

While we’re not hearing about any revolutionary changes to zoom capabilities, it’s safe to assume that the 5x optical zoom will remain a Pro-exclusive feature. The standard iPhone 17 and the new slim model will likely stick with digital zoom.

    Under-Display Face ID?

This one’s a bit of a long shot, but there are whispers about Apple potentially moving Face ID components under the display on the Pro models. This could lead to an even smaller notch or punch-hole, maximizing screen real estate.

However, given Apple’s commitment to security and quality, they’ll only make this move if they’re 100% confident in the technology.

    Battery and Charging

While we haven’t heard many specific rumours about battery capacity for the iPhone 17 lineup, we can make some educated guesses based on trends and the other rumoured features.

    Slimmer Design, Smarter Power

The new slim iPhone model presents an interesting challenge – how do you maintain good battery life in such a thin device? Apple’s likely approach:

    • More efficient A19 chip (especially if it’s 2nm)
    • LTPO display technology for better power management
    • Potentially new battery chemistry for higher energy density

While we haven’t heard specific rumours about charging speeds, it’s possible Apple might finally catch up to some Android competitors in this department. Could we see faster wired and wireless charging?

    Easier Battery Replacements?

Here’s an interesting tidbit – the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max might adopt a new adhesive for the battery that’s easier to remove. This could make battery replacements simpler, whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or taking your phone to a repair shop.

    MagSafe Enhancements?

The MagSafe system has been a hit, and Apple’s likely to continue refining it. We might see stronger magnets, faster wireless charging, or even new MagSafe accessories designed specifically for the iPhone 17 lineup.

    USB-C 2.0?

The iPhone 15 introduced USB-C to the iPhone world, but it was limited to USB 2.0 speeds on the base models. There’s a chance the entire iPhone 17 lineup could get faster USB 3.2 or even Thunderbolt support, enabling faster data transfers and more versatile connectivity options.

    Connectivity

Let’s explore what advancements we might see in connectivity:

    5G Evolution

5G is now standard across the iPhone lineup, but the technology is still evolving. The iPhone 17 could bring:

    • Support for more 5G bands globally
    • Improved 5G power efficiency
    • Potentially faster mmWave 5G speeds (though this might remain Pro-exclusive)

Wi-Fi 7: The Next Big Thing

While Wi-Fi 6E is still rolling out to many devices, the tech world is already gearing up for Wi-Fi 7. The iPhone 17 lineup could be among the first smartphones to support this new standard, offering:

    • Theoretical speeds up to 46 Gbps (compared to Wi-Fi 6’s 9.6 Gbps)
    • Lower latency
    • Better performance in congested areas

    Bluetooth 5.3 (or beyond?)

The latest Bluetooth standard brings improvements in reliability, range, and energy efficiency. The iPhone 17 will likely support Bluetooth 5.3 at a minimum, but we could even see a newer version by 2025.

    UWB Advancements

Ultra-Wideband technology has enabled features like precise FindMy tracking and digital car keys. Apple might expand UWB capabilities in the iPhone 17, potentially enabling:

    • More accurate indoor navigation
    • Improved AirDrop functionality
    • New smart home integration features

    Satellite Connectivity

The emergency satellite SOS feature introduced in recent iPhones could see expansion in the 17 series. We might see:

    • Non-emergency satellite messaging
    • Broader global coverage
    • Integration with more services

    Software: iOS 19 and Beyond

The release of iOS 18.2 and its Apple Intelligence experienced delays but has finally made it!

While it’s a bit early to predict exactly what iOS 19 will bring to the table, we can make some educated guesses based on Apple’s software trends and the rumoured hardware capabilities of the iPhone 17.

    AI Integration

Artificial Intelligence is the hot topic in tech, and Apple’s likely to double down on AI features in iOS 19.

    We might see:

    • More advanced on-device AI processing thanks to the A19 chip
    • Improved Siri capabilities, possibly with ChatGPT-like conversational abilities
    • AI-enhanced photo and video editing tools

    Customization Galore

Apple’s been gradually allowing more user customization, and this trend is likely to continue:

    • More dynamic widget options
    • Expanded Always-On display customization (remember, all models might get this feature!)
    • Potentially user-themeable UI elements beyond just the lock screen

    Health and Wellness Focus

Did you know that iOS 18 featured helpful features for expectant mothers?

    iOS 19 might bring:

    • New health tracking metrics
    • Improved sleep analysis
    • Mental health monitoring and support features

    Augmented Reality Boost

With rumours of Apple’s AR/VR headset on the horizon, iOS 19 might include features to better integrate iPhones with this new technology:

    • Enhanced AR development tools
    • New AR-based system apps or features
    • Improved hand and body tracking for AR experiences

    Privacy and Security Enhancements

Apple’s reputation for privacy is a key selling point. Expect iOS 19 to double down on this with:

    • More granular app permissions
    • Enhanced tracking prevention
    • Potentially new encryption features for messages and data

    Ecosystem Integration

As Apple’s ecosystem grows, iOS 19 will likely improve how iPhones interact with other Apple devices:

    • Seamless workflows between iPhone, iPad, and Mac
    • Enhanced Apple Watch integration
    • New features for AirPods and other accessories

    Release Date and Pricing

When can we get our hands on the iPhone 17, and how much will it cost us?

    Release Date

Barring any major global events or supply chain disruptions, we can expect:

    • Announcement event: Early to mid-September 2025
    • Pre-orders: Typically the Friday following the announcement
    • Official release: About a week after pre-orders begin

So, pencil in mid-to-late September 2025 on your calendars.

    Pricing Predictions

Now, this is where things get a bit trickier, especially with the rumoured new slim model shaking up the lineup. Here’s our best guess at how pricing might pan out:

    1. iPhone 17: Starting at $799 (same as current base model)
    2. iPhone 17 Pro: Starting at $999
    3. iPhone 17 Pro Max: Starting at $1,199
    4. iPhone 17 Slim/Air: This is the wild card. It could slot in between the base and Pro models at around $899, or it might be positioned as a ultra-premium device at $1,299+

Keep in mind, that these are purely speculative figures based on current pricing trends. Apple could always surprise us.

    Factors That Could Affect Pricing

Several elements could influence the final price tags:

    • New technologies: If Apple introduces groundbreaking features, it might justify a price bump
    • Manufacturing costs: The ongoing chip shortage and potential new manufacturing processes could impact pricing
    • Market conditions: Economic factors and competition from other smartphone makers play a role
    • Currency fluctuations: Global economic conditions can affect pricing in different regions
