    Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence has deeply integrated advanced features into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This system harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks.

    On-Device Processing

Apple has introduced Private Cloud Compute. This system extends the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud, unlocking even more intelligence capabilities.

Private Cloud Compute represents a fundamental change in server-based intelligence. When using this feature, users’ data is never stored or shared with Apple; it is used only to fulfill their specific request. To maintain transparency and trust, independent experts can inspect the code that runs on Apple silicon servers to continuously verify this privacy promise.

The system employs a sophisticated decision-making process when handling user requests. Apple Intelligence first analyzes whether a request can be processed on the device. If greater computational capacity is needed, it can draw on Private Cloud Compute, which will send only the data that is relevant to the task to be processed on Apple silicon servers.

    Privacy-Focused Features

Apple has implemented several privacy-focused features to ensure user data remains secure and protected. The Apple silicon servers that form the foundation of Private Cloud Compute provide unprecedented cloud security. This starts with the Secure Enclave, which protects critical encryption keys on the server just as it does on a user’s iPhone. Secure Boot ensures the OS running on the server is signed and verified, mirroring the security measures in iOS.

Additionally, the Trusted Execution Monitor makes sure only signed and verified code runs, while attestation enables a user’s device to securely verify the identity and configuration of a Private Cloud Compute cluster before sending a request.

For users who choose to access ChatGPT through Siri or Writing Tools, Apple has built-in additional privacy protections. Their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. Users can access ChatGPT for free without creating an account, though ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for those who choose to connect their account.

Apple has also introduced new features to give users more control over their personal information. Locked and hidden apps provide peace of mind by preventing others from inadvertently seeing something unintended when showing their screen or handing over their device. Users can lock an app to protect its contents from view or hide an app to help prevent others from seeing it.

In iOS 18, Apple has improved Contacts permissions, allowing users to choose which contacts to share with an app rather than giving an app access to all their contacts. The new Accessory Setup Kit provides developers with a way to pair a user’s accessories without letting an app see all the other devices on their network, keeping devices private and making pairing seamless.

    iOS 18: More Customizable

    New AI-Powered Features

iOS 18 brings a host of intelligent features powered by Apple Intelligence, making iPhones smarter and more intuitive. One of the standout additions is the introduction of systemwide Writing Tools. These tools, available across various apps including Mail, Notes, Pages, and even third-party applications, allow users to enhance their writing with greater ease.

The Rewrite feature enables users to adjust the tone of their text to suit different audiences and tasks. For those who want to ensure their writing is more polished, the Proofread tool checks grammar, word choice, and sentence structure, offering suggestions with explanations. When dealing with lengthy texts, the Summarize feature comes in handy, condensing selected text into a digestible paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list.

Notifications get an upgrade too. Priority Notifications surface the most important alerts at the top of the stack, while summaries help users quickly scan long or stacked notifications right from the Lock Screen. For those who value focus, the new Reduce Interruptions feature, part of the Focus mode, filters notifications to show only those that might need immediate attention.

Apple Intelligence also powers image creation capabilities. With Image Playground, users can create fun images in seconds, choosing from styles like Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. This feature is integrated into apps like Messages and is also available as a standalone app for more extensive experimentation.

Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, becomes more deeply integrated into the system experience with iOS 18. It now offers device support, answering thousands of questions about how to perform tasks on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. With enhanced language-understanding capabilities, Siri can now take hundreds of new actions across Apple and third-party apps.

    Enhanced Security Measures

iOS 18 introduces robust security and privacy features to keep user data safe. One significant addition is the built-in password app, which uses end-to-end encryption to store all credentials securely. This app streamlines login and password management across apps and websites, including sections for passwords, Passkeys, two-factor authentication codes, and Wi-Fi passwords.

The new operating system also introduces automatic passkey upgrades, allowing developers to offer users the option to upgrade their accounts from traditional passwords to more secure passkeys. This change enhances security while simplifying the login process for users.

Privacy gets a boost with new contact access controls. Users can now choose which contacts to share with an app, rather than granting access to their entire contact list. The ContactAccessButton and ContactAccessPicker features make it easy for users to manage contact access within apps.

Another notable security feature is the ability to lock or hide specific apps. This prevents accidental access, message sending, or purchases when someone else is using the device. Users can require Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode to access these protected apps.

For more complex AI tasks that require additional processing power, Apple has introduced Private Cloud Compute (PCC). This system extends the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud while ensuring that user data is never stored or accessible to Apple. PCC employs various security measures, including end-to-end encryption, secure boot, and a Trusted Execution Monitor, to keep user data safe and private.
