Apple is reportedly accelerating its plans to introduce a foldable iPad, aiming for a release sooner than previously anticipated.

Recent reports suggest that the foldable iPad could hit the market as early as late 2026 or early 2027.

But more significant is the rumoured software twist that may surprise you…

A Mac disguised as an iPad

According to a recent report from TechRadar, Apple is developing an 18.8-inch foldable device that blurs the lines between an iPad and a MacBook.

The tablet is anticipated to run macOS instead of the traditional iPadOS, which would potentially make it extra powerful. This move could provide users with a desktop-like experience on a portable, foldable device, combining the versatility of a tablet with the power of a Mac. And since Apple love their Apple Intelligence we can assume it will be heavily AI-integrated.

    Design and Display Innovations

Apple is reportedly focusing on eliminating the notorious screen crease found in many current foldable devices. The goal is to create a nearly invisible crease, delivering a smooth and uninterrupted display experience.

    Market Positioning and Competition

With competitors like Samsung, Google, and OnePlus already in the foldable market, Apple’s entry is almost expected. Mark Ellis has wanted the Apple foldable iPad since 2023…

However, by potentially offering a foldable device that runs macOS, Apple distinguishes itself from rivals whose foldables typically run mobile operating systems. This strategy could attract professionals and creatives seeking the flexibility of a tablet with the functionality of a desktop operating system.

    Anticipated Launch and Foldable iPhones

While earlier reports suggested a 2028 release, the latest information points to a late 2026 launch for the foldable iPad. It’s unclear why Apple has accelerated their timeline but it could indicate Apple’s desire to keep up with other companies in the foldable market.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPhone, though it is not expected to debut before 2026.

    Conclusion

By potentially integrating macOS with the iPad, Apple is poised to offer a unique device that caters to both portability and productivity.

The prospect of a foldable iPad with a desktop-class operating system is an exciting development for tech enthusiasts and professionals alike. But since nothing is officially confirmed yet, the future of the foldable iPad could be ever-changing.
