There are a lot of earbuds on the market, all with their own pros and cons. But which are the best wireless earbuds for 2024?

In this guide we’ll be discovering the top five buds, from the Sony Wf-1000XM5’s to the Apple AirPods Pro 2’s.

So without further ado… Here’s a list of the top 5 wireless earbuds for 2024.

The Best Overall Wireless Earbuds: Sony WF-1000XM5

If you’re seeking the best overall wireless earbuds, the Sony WF-1000XM5 are the front runners. We’ve covered them in depth here, but here’s the overview…

     Black Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds.

A welcome upgrade from their WF-1000XM4 predecessor, the WF-1000XM5 boasts a combination of good sound quality, noise-cancelling technology, and a comfortable, ergonomic design.

Here’s why the Sony XM5 buds won our Best Overall Wireless Earbuds category:

    Sound Quality

The WF-1000XM5 delivers a great level of clarity and detail for music enthusiasts.

Sony’s earbuds create a balanced and immersive soundscape, with a rich, powerful bass, expressive midranges, and crisp, articulate highs.

    Noise Cancellation

One of the standout features of the XM5’s is their noise-cancelling capabilities.

The earbuds’ can block out a wide range of ambient sounds, from the rumble of a busy city street to the droning hum of an airplane cabin.

While the noise-cancelling technology is good for the Sony XM5 earbuds, there are some hiccups…

Some people find that they can’t get a snug fit, so they have to jam the foam tip pretty deep to achieve full noise cancellation.

    Comfort and Convenience

Comfort is a crucial consideration when it comes to wireless earbuds, and the WF-1000XM5 do a fine job in this department.

The ergonomic design and lightweight construction ensure a secure and comfortable fit. They are a pretty petite size with a nice case (although some say it can be difficult to remove the buds).

Although some people claim the glossy finish on the buds affects the way they sit in the ear. For example, if you have a larger ear, sweat and oil buildup can cause the XM5’s to slip out out.

The earbuds do offer a host of features, such as multipoint connectivity, touch controls, and a long-lasting battery life.

    Price:

The Sony WF-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds are £219.99/ $299.99 or £215 from Amazon here and $299.99 from BestBuy here.

    Cons:

    • If you have a larger ear, sweat and oil buildup can cause the XM5’s to slip out due to the glossy finish.
    • Price
    • Some find it difficult to achieve full noise cancellation.
    • The 1000XM5 Spatial audio with head tracking is limited as It only works with certain devices that support Android 13 and above unlike the Bose QuietComfort Ultra from Bose

    The Bottom Line

The Sony WF-1000XM5 offer brilliant sound quality, industry-leading noise-cancellation, and comfort, but for some the price may be a little high especially since the spatial audio is not supported on some platforms.

However, they are an exceptional all-rounder when it comes to wireless earbuds.

Sony’s WF-C700N earbuds have managed to offer a feature-rich and sonically impressive package at a mid-range price point.

    Sound Quality

The WF-C700N earbuds are no slouch when it comes to audio performance.

The rich, vibrant midranges, and crisp highs come together to create a, immersive listening experience. Although, the bass is slightly lacking.

    Advanced Noise Cancellation

One of the standout features of the WF-C700N is their  active noise cancellation (ANC) capabilities.

Utilizing Sony’s noise-cancelling technology, these earbuds effectively block out a wide range of ambient sounds, similarly to the XM5 buds mentioned earlier.

    Comfort and Convenience

The Sony WF-C700N earbuds have a lightweight, ergonomic design that ensures a secure and comfortable fit. Unlike some of the above, the 700N ear buds offer ear tips in sizes 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm. Although the case is difficult to open one- handed and some believe the design feels a little cheap.

Additionally, the earbuds offer a host of convenient features, such as touch controls, voice assistant integration, and a battery life that can keep you powered up throughout the day.

    Price:

The Sony WF-C700N earbuds are £89.99/ $119.99 or £78.69 from Amazon here and $119.99 from BestBuy here.

    Cons:

    • ANC can’t block out low-frequency noise effectively.
    • Case difficult to open one-handed
    • Battery life is only 7.5 hours with ANC on
    • Bass is lacking

    The Bottom Line

For those seeking a high-quality pair of wireless earbuds without the premium price tag, the Sony WF-C700N are a great choice, although the battery life is a little lacking and there are some slightly frustrating design features.

The Best For Apple Fans: The Apple AirPods Pro 2

For Apple devotees, the AirPods Pro 2 are a natural choice. We’ve written a very detailed article about them here, but here’s the overview.

White Apple AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C case.

    Sound Quality

The Apple AirPods Pro 1’s were a little dull when it came to sound, but the Pro 2’s make a welcome improvement. They even rival the AirPods Max!

    Noise cancelling and transparency

The H2 chip allows for noise cancellation that is comparable with over the ear headphones- quite a feat! The only exception is their performance in windy environments.

Furthermore, the transparency mode make the AirPod Pro 2’s a very attractive choice. Transparency mode is a switchable feature that allows ambient sounds from the surrounding environment into your ears.
