A new 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro costs $1,599/£1,699 from the Apple Store. A refurbished version is currently priced at $1,359/£1,439, meaning you save $240/£260.

Whilst this might not seem like a massive saving, especially compared to third-party refurbishment sites, you are getting a lot for your money. Additionally, by buying through the Certified Refurbished store, you will get a one-year warranty and the option to buy Apple Care.

Apple Refurbishment Process

This is going to sound like some Apple marketing talk, but if your main concern is the quality of Apple’s refurbished Macs, then you can rest easy.

According to Apple, Certified Refurbished products undergo a rigorous refurbishment process. Each laptop is thoroughly inspected, internally cleaned, and repaired as needed. Additionally, all necessary parts are replaced, and, crucially, a new battery is installed. The main annoyance with refurbished products is that the battery is weak after years of use. Not so here.

Additionally, refurbished Apple products are never severely damaged before the process. Apple isn’t putting effort into MacBooks that are at the end of their lives, only ones that need minimum repair jobs.

This means that when you purchase a refurbished M3 MacBook Pro, you can expect a device that is in near-new condition, complete with the same one-year warranty as a brand-new MacBook Pro.

As proof, I am writing this very article on a refurbished M1 MacBook Pro and it has served me well without issues for over a year now. In a few years, I’ll probably be reinvesting in a refurbished M3 model!

Another notable difference is the number of Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. The M3 MacBook Pro features two ports, which should be sufficient for most users. However, it’s worth mentioning that the M3 chip officially supports only one external monitor. If multiple external displays are a requirement for your workflow, the M3 Pro may be a more suitable option.

Also, there are currently no refurbished 16-inch M3 MacBooks on the Apple Store. So if you want one, you’ll have to wait.

The M3 Pro and M3 Max models are not yet available as refurbished options, but they should be available in the coming months, especially as other products like the M3 MacBook Air are released.

Configurations and Availability

Apple’s Certified Refurbished store currently offers two configurations of the M3 MacBook Pro. They are identical in terms of specs, both offering 8GB unified memory, 512GB SSD, an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU.

The only difference is the option to choose between Space Grey and Silver. The Space Black colourway which caused much hype back in October 2023 is only available on the M3 Pro models and above.

By opting for a refurbished M3 MacBook Pro, you contribute to reducing electronic and mineral waste. Inside your laptop, there is a wealth of valuable metals that come at a huge ecological and sometimes human cost to obtain, as well as non-recyclable metals and plastics.

Refurbished products give new life to previously owned laptops, preventing them from ending up in landfills. The environment should always factor into any buying decision so, if you can, consider buying refurbished.

Third-party Refurbished M3 MacBook Pro

Finding a refurbished M3 MacBook Pro from a place that isn’t Apple is hard at the moment. The laptops have only been available for a few months so there aren’t that many people trading them in.

Still, in the UK, websites like BackMarket are selling refurbished M3 Pro MacBook Pros while Tech Trade intermittently has standard M3 chip models with 16GB unified memory and 1TB SSD for sale at £1,899, a saving of £200 compared to new.

More options from places like Best Buy will become available in the second half of 2024 as faulty or unwanted devices are traded in.

An M1 Max MacBook Pro for example is incredibly powerful and will realistically meet anyone’s needs. Plus, there are some excellent deals to be found for these.
