I love my AirPods Max. They’re biblically silly when viewed on face value; overpriced, over-engineered and featuring quite possibly the most stupid case ever created for a pair of headphones.
But when you pick them up and place them on your head, all of that silliness evaporates.
The AirPods Max are a stonking pair of headphones. The sound alone justifies the price, and (lack of USB-C charging aside), they’re about as convenient as it gets when it comes to living with headphones on a daily basis.
And then, there’s the build quality. I haven’t held a pair of consumer headphones that are as well made as the AirPods Max, ever.
There’s just one problem. If you’re serious about your AirPods Max and, in particular, keeping them in decent shape, you need to invest in some accessories.
I’ve narrowed down the accessories you need to just four:
- a case (let’s do Apple’s work for them, shall we?);
- charger (yeah, you don’t get one);
- a stand (you don’t want to just leave them lying around, do you?); and
- silicone ear cup protectors (if you’re super-worried about scratches).
Conspicuous by its absence is the audio cable, for which Apple charges $35. This is because I don’t personally think it’s a worthwhile accessory, not least because of the price, but also because these cans work flawlessly via Bluetooth.
So, I’ve saved you some money there. Now, it’s time to spend some!
co2CREA Hard Travel Carrying Case for AirPods Max
Ugh, the AirPods Max case. So much has been said about this (mainly by yours truly). But while I still think it’s one of the daftest things to emerge from Apple’s design labs, it does have some upsides. No, really.
Despite any marginal wins, the AirPods Max case really is very poor at looking after your expensive headphones if you intend on taking them out and about with you.
As you’d expect, there are several third-party alternatives for AirPods Max cases, including the eye-watering Waterfield option (which comes in at $99). Instead, I’d suggest you opt for the co2CREA travel case, which is satisfying sturdy in the hand and reassuringly fluffy on the inside.
It’s big, make no doubt about it, but slim enough to fit comfortably in most backpacks. There’s also a handy little compartment for your charger and cable and a set of very well made zips to keep your AirPods Max safely tucked away.
AUKEY Omnia Mix3 90W 3-Port PD Charger
Just like the latest iPhones, the AirPods Max don’t come with a charging brick. That’s annoying, but it can be remedied fairly easily.
I’ve offered a cheaper alternative below, but my pick is the AUKEY Omnia Mix3, simply because it offers so much flexibility beyond acting as your AirPods Max charger.
The Omnia Mix3 includes three charging outputs. One USB-A and two USB-C – one of which charges at 90W for devices that accept fast charging. The AirPods Max don’t, unfortunately, but they will charge perfectly well from this brick, and the added bonus is that you can connect your Mac and another device at the exact same time to keep everything charging safely.
Cheaper alternative: AUKEY Minima Fast Charger with Foldable Plug ($12.99)
Benks Desktop Headset Stand for AirPods Max
I highly recommend headphone stands. Without them, you have the option of either leaving your expensive AirPods Max lying around on desktop surfaces where they can easily be knocked, sat on or scratched – or stowing them away in a carry case.
Headphones look far better on stands when they’re not in use. This is particularly the case with the AirPods Max which are a sight to behold, like many Apple products.
This Benks headset stand is the most elegant I have in my studio, and superbly built for the price. A shiny aluminium stem supports your headphones and looks very premium, to boot. It’s very stable, too, and the ‘head beam’ is perfectly curved for the AirPods Max canopy.
Sure, you can get cheaper headphone stands, but why not buy one that makes a real statement? This is my favourite accessory on this page by far; it’s very Apple-like and a perfect accompaniment for the AirPods Max.

Auyuiiy Silicone Case Compatible with AirPods Max
This will definitely be a marmite option for AirPods Max users. Personally, I’d rather throw caution to the wind and let those beautiful aluminium ear cups breathe, but if you’d rather avoid scratches, you’ll need some protection.
The Auyuiiy silicon cases mould perfectly around the ear cups and are super easy to fit. Once on, they’re not going anywhere, and the cut-outs for the mics, charging port and LED are perfectly placed.
They come in lots of colours, too, so it’s actually a pretty neat way of customising the look of your AirPods if you get bored of Apple’s shade of aluminium.
Sorry, that’s more money, isn’t it?
The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted that I’ve just suggested you spend an extra $132.96 on your AirPods Max, taking the total price tag up to $681.96.
However, I’m not suggesting you need all of the above, and there are certainly cheaper alternatives out there. This guide, therefore, simply represents what I believe to be the best bang-for-your-buck when it comes to the most important AirPods Max accessories. Pick and choose what you need!
